The Canterbury/Westland region reported a 22% drop in volumes in June compared to May, although it should be noted that volumes fell right across the region and the decline was not confined to Christchurch City. Compared to June 2010, only Timaru recorded an increase in sales in June, with the region as a whole reporting the weakest annual change in volumes compared to the national result.
The large aftershock on June 13 temporarily halted real estate activity in Christchurch, however, since the Government’s announcements about the Red Zone on June 27 the level of activity has increased markedly. Agents in Christchurch are also now reporting an acute shortage of properties for sale.
